Once I had decided to cross number one off my bucket list, I picked up the phone and called my friend Susan. Like me Susan was a former flight attendant in a previous life but now is the General Manager of The Hotel Indigo; Asheville’s premier urban boutique hotel. The 100-room hotel opened in November 2009 and is anything but ordinary.
Conveniently located just on the edge of downtown Asheville, The Hotel Indigo captures the very heart and soul of her charming southern inhabitants. From the mist-topped mountains to hand crafted art and cutting-edge music hipsters, the hotel offers gracious European hospitality for a style-conscious traveler looking for a refreshing re-energizing atmosphere designed with all the amenities of a full service hotel once comes to expect.
The contemporary decor incorporates an eclectic mix of colors, blended with just the right amounts of sleek metals, wood and stone, all giving The Hotel Indigo an urban ambiance, inspired by the natural surroundings of the city itself, complete with gorgeous views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Guest rooms are equipped with all the standard amenities you’d expect including: flat-screen TV, in-room coffeemaker, large work station, and free Wi-Fi. Spacious and spotless, the well-lighted bathrooms have two framed mirrors hanging above the sink and extra-long counter. A glass door encloses an enormous, tiled shower stall featuring a rainfall shower head. Some luxurious perks included a full-size blow dryer, a pile of extra towels along with an array of Aveda bath products.
Underneath the hotel is a free, private parking garage for guests and there is an on site business center with several computers. The lobby-level Phi Bar and Bistro is a perfect spot for a morning coffee and breakfast; the dinner menu focuses on organic, locally sourced ingredients. Reasonably priced wines and a variety of microbrews are also available. The second-floor fitness room, which is always open, has the requisite cardio equipment and free weights, plus a large TV.
The Hotel Indigo sits just on the edge of downtown, with a number of bars, restaurants, and shops just a few walkable blocks away. The River Arts District is down the road, while Asheville’s big-ticket attractions, including the Biltmore Estate and the Blue Ridge Parkway, are a short drive away.
